Kalsarp Dosh Nivaran puja in Bihar is one of the most requested astrological remedies across the state — in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, and smaller towns. Kalsarp Yoga (also called Kalsarp Dosha) is a planetary configuration that many people carry in their birth charts, often without knowing it. This guide explains what it is, whether you actually have it, and what the puja involves.
Kalsarp Yoga forms in a birth chart when all seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — are hemmed between the shadow planets Rahu (the serpent's head) and Ketu (the serpent's tail).
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart in the zodiac. If all other planets fall within the arc from Rahu to Ketu (moving in the direction of the zodiac), Kalsarp Yoga is formed. The name translates roughly as "the time-snake" — an image of all planetary energy being constricted between two karmic points.
It is important to clarify: Kalsarp Yoga is not always catastrophic. Many highly successful individuals have this configuration. What it does tend to produce is an intense, somewhat all-or-nothing quality to life — periods of extraordinary effort and achievement followed by sudden setbacks, recurring obstacles in specific life areas, and vivid dreams (often of snakes or water). The nature and severity depend heavily on which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy and the overall strength of the chart.
There are 12 named types of Kalsarp Yoga, each corresponding to which house Rahu occupies:
The most commonly encountered types in consultations across Bihar are Anant (1st house), Takshak (7th house, causing marriage delays or conflicts), and Ghatak (10th house, causing career instability).
People with an active Kalsarp Yoga often report:
Importantly, these effects are most intense during Rahu and Ketu mahadashas and antardasha periods. During Saturn, Jupiter, or other planetary periods, the Kalsarp configuration may be relatively quiet.
The puja is a structured Vedic ritual aimed at propitiating Rahu and Ketu, seeking their grace to release the constriction they create in the chart. There are variations based on regional tradition and severity of the dosha.
Basic structure of the puja:
Duration: A basic Kalsarp Shanti puja takes 3 to 4 hours. An elaborate version with full Sarpa Sukta recitation and 108 namaskaras can take a full day.
The most powerful times for Kalsarp Dosh Nivaran puja include:
Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra is the most famous site for Kalsarp Dosh Nivaran puja nationally, and many Bihar families make the pilgrimage. The Trimbakeshwar temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, and the priests there are highly trained in the specific ritual.
However, a properly conducted puja in Bihar — at Vishnupad Ghat in Gaya, the Mahadev temples along the Ganges in Patna, or in a dedicated ritual space with a qualified pandit — is fully effective. The intention, the correctness of the ritual, and the devotion of the participant matter more than the geography.
Kalsarp Shanti puja is not a one-time cure that instantly removes all obstacles. Its effects are gradual and cumulative:
